Synopsis

A dive, the noon sunlight cuts through the water. The air in both lungs will have to be enough to rip the abalone from the rocks at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. With no aid from air tanks or any other tools to enable underwater breathing, the body as a whole is pushed to its limit. In Wagu, a fishing village in the Ise Peninsula, three women, Matsumi, Mayumi and Masumi, dive everyday not knowing what they will find. Underwater, their delicate bodies turn into those of sea hunters. The Ama-San have been diving like this in Japan for over 2000 years.

Μια βουτιά, το μεσημεριανό φως του ήλιου διαπερνά το νερό. Ο αέρας και στους δύο πνεύμονες θα πρέπει να είναι αρκετός, έτσι ώστε να μπορέσουν να ξεκολλήσουν τα αμπαλόνε από τα βράχια, στον βυθό του Ειρηνικού Ωκεανού. Χωρίς την υποστήριξη κάποιας συσκευής παροχής αέρα, ή άλλα εργαλεία που να επιτρέπουν την υποβρύχια αναπνοή, το σώμα ως σύνολο καλείται να φτάσει στα όριά του. Στο Wagu, ένα ψαροχώρι στη χερσόνησο Ise, τρεις γυναίκες, η Matsumi, η Mayumi και η Masumi βουτούν καθημερινά, χωρίς να ξέρουν τι θα βρουν. Κάτω από το νερό, τα εύθραυστα σώματά τους μετατρέπονται θαλάσσιους κυνηγούς. Οι Ama-San βουτούν με αυτόν τον τρόπο στην Ιαπωνία, για περισσότερα από 2000 χρόνια.

Um mergulho, a luz do sol do meio-dia atravessa a água a pique. O ar que está nos pulmões terá que chegar até que se consiga arrancar o abalone das rochas do fundo do Oceano Pacifico. Sem o auxílio de botija de ar ou outra ferramenta que potencie a capacidade de permanecer debaixo de água, todo o corpo é convocado a atingir o seu limite. Em Wagu, uma pe- quena vila piscatória da Península de Ise, Matsumi, Mayumi e Masumi, mergulham diariamente sem saber o que irão encon- trar. Os seus corpos delicados em terra dão lugar a caçadoras no mar. Estes mergulhos são dados no Japão há mais de 2000 anos pelas Ama-San.

Cláudia Varejão (1980, Portugal) was educated in film directing and camerawork in Lisbon, São Paulo and Berlin. Besides being a filmmaker, she works as a cinematographer on documentaries. She is the author of the short film trilogy Fim de semana (2007), Um dia frio (2009) and Luz da manhã (2012). In 2016 she made her feature debut, Ama-san. Amor fati (2020) was selected for IFFR 2021. Varejão also developed a career as a photographer and creates video projects for theatre, performances and fine arts.

Cláudia Varejão (1980, Portugal) εκπαιδεύτηκε στη σκηνοθεσία ταινιών στη Λισαβόνα, το Σάο Πάολο και το Βερολίνο. Εκτός από σκηνοθέτις, εργάζεται ως κινηματογραφίστρια σε ντοκιμαντέρ. Είναι συγγραφέας της τριλογίας μικρού μήκους Fim de semana (2007), Um dia frio (2009) και Luz da manhã (2012). Το 2016 έκανε το ντεμπούτο της σε μεγάλου μήκους, το Ama-san. Το Amor fati(2020) επιλέχθηκε για το Φεστιβάλ του Ρότερνταμ το 2021. Η Varejão είναι φωτογράφος και video artist σε θέατρο, παραστάσεις και καλές τέχνες.
