​Ο Fern Silva είναι ένας καλλιτέχνης που άρχισε να εργάζεται ως μοντέρ και οπερατέρ στη Νέα Υόρκη. Οι πρώτες του ταινίες επικεντρώνονται στη σχέση του με την Πορτογαλία και έκτοτε οι θεματικές του έχουν διευρυνθεί, υπογραμμίζοντας την επίδραση της βιομηχανίας στον πολιτισμό και το περιβάλλον. Για πάνω από μια δεκαετία, οι ταινίες του, τις οποίες έχει γυρίσει με φιλμ 16 χιλιοστών, έχουν προβληθεί ευρέως σε φεστιβάλ, μουσεία και κινηματογράφους, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των Διεθνών Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου του Τορόντο, του Βερολίνου, του Λοκάρνο, του Ρότερνταμ, της Νέας Υόρκης, του Λονδίνου, της Μελβούρνης και του Χονγκ Κονγκ, ενώ έχουν επίσης παρουσιαστεί στα MOMA PS1, New Museum, Anthology Film Archive και Harvard Film Archive.

Fern Silva (U.S.A. - Portugal, 1982)

Fern Silva is an artist who began working as an editor and cameraperson in NYC. His early films focus on his relationship to Portugal and have since expanded, underlining the influence of industry on culture and the environment. For over a decade, his 16mm films have been screened widely in festivals, museums and cinematheques, including the Toronto, Berlin, Locarno, Rotterdam, New York, London, Melbourne, and Hong Kong International Film Festivals, MOMA PS1, New Museum, Anthology Film Archive, and the Harvard Film Archive.

 

He has received prizes from the Ann Arbor Film Festival (Gus Van Sant Award), 25FPS Festival (Grand Prix), Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Agora Post-Production Award), Cinema du Réel (Best Sound), as well as Berlinale (Encounters, Special Mention). His work has been featured in publications including Cinema Scope, Filmmaker Magazine and Film Comment. He has taught Filmmaking at various institutions, including the University of Illinois at Chicago, Bard College and Bennington College. He has also received support from the Jerome Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, MacDowell, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, as well as Film Study Center at Harvard University.
